Basic Care of your Bonsai Tree
Remember that BONSAI are OUTDOOR trees (other than specific indoor varieties) and should only be taken indoors for short periods.
Water regularly during hot weather. Do not allow to dry out.
Spray foliage after sun has gone off trees.
Feed regularly during the growing season (PHOSTROGEN is a good general feed for this)
Using fingertips, pinch out growing tips to promote bushing out of foliage pads and thereby shape them.
In winter protect the tree from heavy frosts by placing in a cold greenhouse, garage or somewhere similar.
Do not over-water while tree is dormant.
Ensure that compost is free draining and that pot drainage holes are kept clear.
Re-potting is best done in February / March.
Re-pot into same pot, pruning roots back by approximately a third when the tree becomes pot bound (about every 2 years).
Basic compost mix = 1 part John Innes No. 2, 2 parts moss peat, 2 parts horticultural grit, well mixed.
Only buy BONSAI from a reputable source such as a BONSAI nursery or BONSAI society.
Join your local BONSAI Society where you will be able to get detailed help and advice.
Enjoy your trees. With the above basic care they will give you a great deal of pleasure.
